The World of HDMI Cables
by Rupert Reiner
A digital connection that processes both high definition video and high resolution audio in one cable, High Definition Multimedia Interface or HDMI is the digital version of the older analog models like SCART, VGA, composite video, S-Video and radio frequency coaxial cables. HDMI has the capacity to route high 1080p video resolution at 60 frames per second and take on a maximum of 8 digital audio channels using a single cable. It can process TV and PC video data and has a Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) connection that gives the user the option to manage multiple devices with a remote control.
HDMI technology pairs relatively well with the HDTV format, connecting the television to third party devices such as DVD players, game consoles, Blu-ray players, and DVRs.
Because it is the cutting edge in video and audio cable technology, HDMI cables can offer better output in terms of image and audio quality. It does a better job of feeding audio and video data to and from two devices using a single connector.
HDMI cable connectors come in various sizes, from the regular-sized connectors, to mini and micro. With an HDMI cable, you don't run the risk of having to figure out which slot goes into which slot for A/V and so on. You only have to connect one plug into a receptacle. It works much like the USB cables you use for your computer, only this is more efficient in transmitting high definition multimedia data.
As opposed to what some computer parts salespeople would tell you, there are cheaper HDMI cables in the market, the performance of which is not discernibly inferior to the more expensive HDMI cables. If you're only looking to use HDMI for personal home use, stick to the more affordable brands and make your money go a long way.
HDMI cables come in a number of versions, and it's a bit of a challenge to understand which one is best. For instance, HDMI 1.3 can be supported by a majority of new technologies; however, some older devices can only communicate with the older version of HDMI. A lot has been said about HDMI 1.3's increased bandwidth, but the older HDMIs still have the same usable benefits and can support systems which you already have.
However, one thing that can be said about HDMI 1.3 is that it can transmit high resolution audio in bit stream format, and process it with impeccable quality.
